Family Classes

We offer personalized instructional lessons to fit the needs of you and your family; every trip is designed around the choices you make. There are alot of things to do whether you are sailing with us in Oriental, NC or the Florida Keys including exploring islands, fishing, swimming, kayaking, and just relaxing. We plan all of our daily activities around your preferences. We also understand the need for kids to be active, we try to pace all of our family trips to keep them engaged. Captain Derrek and Captain Stephanie spent four years working in the Florida Keys with Boy Scouts at the High Adventure Sea Base where they taught youth groups on 6-day liveaboard charters. They love working with all age groups.

All trips include full use of the boat, fuel, ice, fishing gear and license, dinghy, and of course, your licensed captains.

USCG regulations allow us to carry up to six passengers. The private stateroom on S/V Barefoot accommodates two adults. A settee in the main salon can be converted into a bed for two more adults. Sleeping spots for additional guests can be found in our salon, but we would only recommend this for families with children.

Our courses are designed to help you discover the joy of cruising together as a family.  While on a learn-to-sail vacation, families build confidence in each other with personalized instruction in an easygoing, fun environment that makes sailing together enjoyable.

During your class you will receive personalized instruction guided by two licensed captains, Captain Derrek Polt and Captain Stephanie Mansberger. Our supportive approach allows your family to build your skills and confidence at your own pace and to share in the decision making process, making sailing comfortable for everyone.

Beginning sailors can practice and learn basic sailing skills on our smaller keelboat. You will learn about sailing, anchoring, docking and boat systems while exploring the waters near Oriental, NC or in the winter season, the warm waters of Biscayne Bay and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
